Polymer scientists at the CSIR and microbiologists at the University of Pretoria invented and tested the shield between 2006 and 2014.

In simulated stomach acid and intestinal fluid, shielded bacteria delivered 1.6 to 1.8 log more live cells than unprotected ones, roughly 40 to 65 times.
