Lutein

A natural plant nutrient that acts as internal sunglasses, filtering blue light to protect your eyes.

What it is

Lutein is a natural yellow pigment and antioxidant extracted from marigold flowers. It is one of the main nutrients that naturally accumulates in the macula—the part of your eye responsible for sharp, detailed central vision.

Lutein acts like internal sunglasses, filtering out harmful blue light from screens and sunlight to protect your eye tissues.

Also known as: Marigold extract lutein

Key benefits

  • Filters high-energy blue light from digital screens and sunlight, which helps defend your eyes.
  • Provides antioxidant protection for retinal cells, reducing daily light-induced strain.
  • Supports visual sharpness, contrast sensitivity, and glare recovery, so your vision stays clear.

Amplified by probiotics

Because lutein is a fat-soluble nutrient, it needs healthy digestive fats and bile to be absorbed. Friendly gut bacteria help balance digestive bile so your body can break down fats and absorb lutein effectively. Probiotics also strengthen your gut lining and reduce quiet inflammation, ensuring that nutrients like lutein pass smoothly into your bloodstream and travel to your eyes.

Typical dose

10–20 mg/day

The evidence

Evidence: strong

Major eye studies such as AREDS2 show that taking lutein every day builds up the protective pigment at the back of the eye and supports long-term vision. Follow-up research confirms its ongoing benefits for eye health as you age. (AREDS2 Research Group 2013, JAMA) (Chew EY 2022, JAMA Ophthalmol)

Safety & who should check first

Lutein is very safe and well tolerated in clinical studies. Taking extremely high amounts may cause a harmless, temporary skin yellowing. Safe for daily use, including during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
