Lactobacillus acidophilus

A friendly bacteria strain that supports dairy digestion, vaginal balance, and healthy gut defence.

What it is

Lactobacillus acidophilus is one of the most famous friendly bacteria found naturally in yoghurt and the human digestive tract. It ferments natural sugars into lactic acid, which helps keep your digestive system balanced.

In Velobiotics products, each L. acidophilus bacterium is protected by a microscopic shield. This keeps the bacteria safe from stomach acid so they reach your intestine alive.

Also known as: L. acidophilus, Acidophilus

Key benefits

  • Breaks down lactose to help make dairy foods easier and more comfortable to digest.
  • Produces natural lactic acid to maintain a healthy, balanced acidity in the gut.
  • Supports healthy vaginal and intimate flora balance in women.
  • Crowds out unwanted bacteria to support your gut's natural defences.

Amplified by probiotics

Lactobacillus acidophilus creates a healthy environment for all your gut bacteria. By producing lactic acid, it gently lowers gut acidity, which helps other friendly bacteria like Bifidobacterium thrive while keeping unwanted microbes away. It also produces natural compounds that protect gut tissue and helps release bound minerals like calcium and magnesium so your body can absorb them better.

Typical dose

1–10 billion live bacteria (CFU) a day

The evidence

Evidence: strong

Clinical research heavily supports Lactobacillus acidophilus for improving lactose digestion, reducing antibiotic-associated diarrhoea, and supporting vaginal flora health. Well-controlled trials confirm its role in stabilising gut permeability and boosting local secretory IgA production. Safety & who should check first

Lactobacillus acidophilus has a long history of safe use in food and supplements. It is gentle and well tolerated across all age groups, including during pregnancy. You may experience mild, temporary gas as your gut adapts.
